A group of Catholics arrived at a church in Ebola-hit Bunia in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo despite a ban on large public gatherings that include mass and burials.

The attendees were instructed by the church deacon to wash their hands at the front gate.

Some faithful say they are aware of the deadly outbreak and are doing their best for self-protection, but they needed the church to get through this period of difficulty.

Another worshipper wearing a face mask notes he's supportive of the preventive measures. "We have sinks here and there. We must also maintain social distancing," he said.

Earlier in May, two Ebola special treatment centres were torched in Ituri Province as health authorities faced resistance from local residents.

Burials in line with health protocols are now carried out under military and police escort.
