Kevin Warsh is sworn in as US Federal Reserve Chair by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, beginning his four-years. US President Donald Trump says he wants the new Fed chair to be "totally independent." This as questions are raised about the president's role in applying pressure to lower interest rates. President Donald Trump on Friday oversaw the swearing-in of the new Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh at the White House. Ahead of the ceremony, Trump tells reporters he would like Warsh's help in stimulating the economy, yet maintains the nation's central bank would remain independent. He said, "I want him to be independent and just do a great job. Don't look at me, don't look at anybody. Just do your own thing and do a great job, okay?" "Thankfully, unlike some of his predecessors, Kevin understands that when the economy is booming, it is, that's a good thing. We don't have to go crazy. Just let it boom." Warsh, who previously served as a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, says he saw former Fed chair Alan Greenspan as a model for the role and the Fed can help with the prosperity of the nation. Warsh said: "Our mandate at the Fed is to promote price stability and maximum employment. When we pursue those aims with wisdom and clarity, independence and resolve -- inflation can be lower; growth, stronger; real take home pay, higher, and America can be more prosperous. And no less important, America's place in the world more secure." The Federal Reserve's independence has been put into question as Trump spent months criticising Warsh's predecessor, Jerome Powell, for being reluctant to cut interests rates, with the president arguing lower borrowing costs would provide an economic boost. The Fed says the interest-rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee had unanimously selected Warsh as chairman.
