Canadian media reveal cases where passengers flying from Canada had their luggage tags secretly switched onto suitcases filled with narcotics. An investigation uncovered at least 17 such cases over the past year. In some cases, innocent travellers were detained for drug smuggling, although all were eventually released. The relevant flights were reportedly en route to the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, the Philippines and South Korea, where drug smuggling can carry the death penalty. Canadian police apprehended six luggage and ramp workers at the Toronto Pearson International Airport on suspicion of swapping bag tags. The report says it takes just a few seconds for airport staff to put the luggage tags onto suitcases loaded with drugs and positioning devices. If the bags clear security checks, accomplices would pick up the drugs upon arrival. But if screened by customs, innocent travellers would be left to face the legal consequences.
