It was not just Hong Kong that experienced torrential rain. Several districts in nearby Shenzhen raised rainstorm warnings to orange with lightning flashing across the sky.

As of Thursday morning, the death toll from the deluge in Shimen County of central Hunan Province has risen to six while ten others are still unaccounted for.

A total of 23 townships and districts have been affected by the heavy rainfall that lashed the province from early Sunday.

Search and rescue operations including the dispatch of emergency helicopters are underway, alongside relief efforts to guarantee daily necessities for the affected residents.

Volunteers in Hupingshan Township, one of the hardest-hit areas, have set up five dining points to offer free meals.

In southwestern Guizhou Province, continuous heavy rain prompted authorities to activate a Level III alert for geological disasters across multiple prefectures as rescuers waded through floodwater to evacuate people to safety.

Earlier this week, four people were confirmed dead after sudden, extreme downpours triggered flooding and landslides in Guiding County.
