Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi says the United States has been sending contradictory statements and excessive irrational rhetoric that have hindered progress in negotiations to end the war.

US President Donald Trump says he is open to a deal that includes a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear programme but Tehran's commitment has to be real.

Iran's foreign minister says a lack of trust remains the main obstacle in Iran's dealings with the US but pointed out the willingness of Washington to continue talks.

He also says the US sends "contradictory messages and contradictory statements, and excessive irrational rhetoric constantly...which run contradictory to any negotiation process or diplomatic path.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One after leaving China US President Donald Trump says he is open to a deal that includes a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear programme.

"They have fully agreed, no nuclear, 20 years it's enough, but the level of guarantee from them is not enough. In other words, it has got to be a real 20 years not a..."

(Reporter) "They need to get all the fuel out and no more productions."

"We have to get everything, but we're not even talking about, I call it the nuclear dust. I came up with the term, it seems to have caught on."

This as Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping who finished talks on Friday agreed the Strait of Hormuz needs to be reopened.

Araghchi says Iran would welcome diplomatic support from other countries particularly from China regarding the vital waterway citing Beijing's previous role in facilitating the restorationof ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Beijing shown little public interest in US requests to get more involved, even though Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity that Xi had in their conversations offered to help.
