A small aircraft on a medical transportation mission has crashed into a mountain range southwest of the US state of New Mexico before dawn Thursday. All four people on board including flight crew and medical personnel were confirmed dead at the scene. A King Air aircraft that took off from Roswell Air Center and en route to the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport crashed in the Capitan Mountains area at midnight. Its operator Trans Aero MedEvac said in a statement that the plane was reported overdue after communications and radar contact were lost. A wildfire was subsequently sparked in surrounding forest outside the mountain town of Ruidoso. Lincoln County officials say the blaze had grown to 35 acres amid dry, windy conditions, as the US Forest Service and State Forestry worked to contain it. The aircraft was located between around 8 and 9 a.m. Thursday morning with crews hiking the last half-mile to reach the site in steep, rocky terrain. The cause of the crash is unknown and is under probe.
