Hong Kong Housing Society will build no more "Senior Citizen Residence Scheme" projects in the next ten years. Instead, the strategy will shift to focusing on unit designs suitable for seniors. Twenty years ago, the Hong Kong Housing Society launched the " Senior Citizen Residences Scheme", providing a "one-stop" solution for middle-class seniors aged 60 or above. Speaking on a radio programme on Saturday, Hong Kong Housing Society Chairman Ling Ka-kan said that no more "Senior Citizen Residences Scheme" projects will be built in the next ten years. Instead, the focus will be on equipping new housing estates with enhanced elderly-friendly designs to address demands from Hong Kong's ageing population. For example, he said door handles and water taps will be designed with a longer handle and not round because the elderly's hands may be unable to cope with them in some cases. Meanwhile, the Housing Society's subsidized sale units account for about 35 percent of its total units, excluding dedicated resettlement housing estates. Ling said with the increase in demand for housing, the proportion of units for sale will be further increased to 40 percent or more in the future, and more large units will be built.
