Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he held a lengthy meeting with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. This is a rare acknowledgment of the leader's role as he remains largely unseen and communicates only through written statements on state television. According to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, more sporadic clashes between Iranian forces and U.S. vessels have taken place in the Strait of Hormuz. The Tasnim news agency later cited an Iranian military source saying the situation had calmed. The U.S. military said it struck two Iran-linked vessels attempting to enter an Iranian port, with a U.S. fighter jet hitting their smokestacks and forcing them to turn back. Speaking during a visit to Rome, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned Tehran against targeting U.S. maritime assets. "Oh, the red line is clear. If they threaten Americans, they're going to get blown up. I mean, how much clearer can you be than that. If you fire on it, if you were a missile launching guy, whatever they call that job, and you're sitting there and you fire a missile at the United States and we saw you fire it, we're going to hit you. Of course we are." Recent days have seen the biggest flare-ups in fighting in and around the Strait of Hormuz since a ceasefire began a month ago. U.S. President Donald Trump said he is awaiting Tehran's response to a U.S. proposal that would formally end the war before talks on more contentious issues, including Iran's nuclear program. "We'll see what happens. Look, they have no military. They have not a lot left. We'll, see what happens." Iran's foreign ministry said the country's leadership is focused on ending the war with the U.S. and Israel in a permanent capacity and is still reviewing Washington's peace proposal.
