Today is World Red Cross Day, with this year also marking the 70th anniversary of the Hong Kong Red Cross. To celebrate the occasion, the HKRC held a kick-off ceremony sharing its humanitarian journey over the past seven decades. Showcasing world-class first aid skills, members of the Hong Kong Red Cross Youth have long contributed to the spirit of humanitarianism and volunteerism in the city. Every May 8th, the World Red Cross Day is celebrated to commemorate the founding of the organisation more than a century ago. Co-founded by Swiss activist Henry Dunant after witnessing the terrors of war at the Battle of Solferino in 1859, the Red Cross is dedicated to treating wounded soldiers as well as civilians during wartime with complete neutrality. With its presence felt across 196 states worldwide, some members of the local Red Cross Youth shared their thoughts on being a part of an international humanitarian group. The reason I joined the Red Cross when I was in Junior 4 was because there was a scheme at my school that required us to select an extracurricular activity for us to join. Although it was a rather hasty decision, I really don't regret joining the Red Cross. I realised the Red Cross is way more than just a uniformed group. I was a scout in my primary school and I would like to continue my uniformed group life. The Red Cross Youth organises various activities first aid competition and drill competition and some service project design. I think these activities are very unique and I would like to learn these skills. Visitors at the Red Cross venue at Olympian City can interact with this AI mirror which can generate photos of its users as Red Cross Youth. Available to the public until Sunday, the Hong Kong Red Cross hopes the activity can remind residents that humanitarian contribution can start at a young age.
