Ted Turner was a transformative figure in 20th-century communications. He revolutionised the way news was reported and lunched the world's first 24-hour news channel, CNN, the Cable News Network, in 1980. The around-the-clock news cycle changed the way news was gathered, reported and presented to the audience. By the time he sold Turner Broadcasting System to Time Warner Inc. in 1996, he had turned his late father's billboard company into a global conglomerate that included seven major cable networks, three professional sports teams and a pair of hit movie studios. He's also a noted philanthropist, and was a stanch support of the United Nations, and in 1997 pledged $1 billion to form the United Nations Foundation. At the time it was the single largest donation made to the UN by an individual. Turner was married three times, most notably to actress and activist Jane Fonda. He was slowed in later years by Lewy body dementia. Long out of the television business and shifted his attention to concentrated on philanthropy.
