Pope Leo XIV calls out US President Donald Trump on misinterpreting his views on Iran and nuclear weapons. The pope urges for more peace talks.

His comments come in the wake of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's trip to the Vatican later this week.

Speaking to reporters in Italy, Pope Leo XIV maintains he never said Iran should obtain nuclear weapons and that US President Donald Trump has been misrepresenting his views.

The statement came after Trump shared his renewed criticism of the pope's stance on Iran in an interview, saying that the American-born pontiff believes "it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon," and that his views are "endangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people."

The pope says he's spoken out against nuclear weapons since he was elected and is aligned with the church's longstanding views on the matter. He calls for peace talks rather than more arms.

"Ever since the entrance into the nuclear age, the whole concept of war has to be re-evaluated in terms today. And I always believe that it's much better to enter into dialogue than to look for arms and to support the arms industry, which gains billions and billions of dollars each year, instead of sitting down at the table solving our problems."

Over in Washington, Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplays the rift between the heads of state and says Trump's criticisms are rooted in his opposition to Iran potentially obtaining a nuclear weapon.

"I think what the president basically said is that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon because they would use it against places that have a lot of Christians and Catholics and others."
