Romania's pro-European Union government collapsed, after lawmakers voted in favour of a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This triggers a fresh period of turmoil less than a year after the governing coalition was sworn in. After a parliamentary debate, 281 lawmakers voted in favour, and only 4 voted against the motion. Lawmakers from Bolojan's party and some other coalition partners did not cast votes. The country's President Nicusor Dan called for calm and assured the public the country will have another pro-EU government in a short time. However, Romania has been grappling with one of the highest budget deficits in the European Union, rampant inflation and a technical recession.
