Uzbek Prime Minister Aripov visits Hong Kong to deepen cooperation in finance and energy

Chief Executive John Lee has met Abdulla Aripov, Uzbekistan's Prime Minister, who visited Hong Kong.

During their meeting, the pair discussed expanding cooperation in areas including finance, energy, and trade.

The Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulla Aripov led a 200-strong delegation to Hong Kong on Wednesday to attend the "Uzbekistan-China (Hong Kong) Business Forum" and the "Made in Uzbekistan" exhibition.

Chief Executive John Lee attended the event.

Aripov says Uzbekistan has introduced sweeping reforms in recent years and is reshaping the country into a more competitive and investor-friendly economy with easing foreign exchange controls and capital flows. 

He notes that bilateral trade with China has grown threefold over the past five years, with a target of reaching 20 billion US dollars this year.

He also highlights some 90 mining and green energy projects in their Central Asian country, worth a total of 2.2 billion US dollars, inviting Chinese and Hong Kong companies to participate in the key mineral extraction and energy development projects.

Alipov stayed in Hong Kong for only one day before departing for Beijing on a chartered flight in the evening, where he will co-chair the China-Uzbekistan Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong.

Earlier in the day, Chief Executive John Lee met Aripov at Government House.  

Both sides exchanged views on strengthening Hong Kong-Uzbekistan cooperation and deepening engagement under the Belt and Road Initiative.
