French President Emmanuel Macron was among the leaders of almost 50 countries who gathered in the Armenian capital Yerevan for the 8th European Political Community summit.

The war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East are topping the agenda.

The Summit will be co-chaired by European Council President Antonio Costa, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Macron will stay on in Armenia after the Summit for a state visit.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also be joining as a guest, the first time a non-European country participates in the meeting.

Armenia had been a strong Russia ally, but has applied to join the European Union as it seeks closer ties to the west.
