Mainland tourists continue exploring the city on the remaining two days of their Golden Week holiday. Both retail and hotel sectors said the holiday brought them business growth.

Mong Kok, a tourist hotspot, is busy with mainlanders on Monday afternoon. Apart from getting an ice-cream from the iconic van, the nearby pharmacies and eateries were also popular among the tourists.

The Immigration Department said more than 700,000 mainlanders visited the city on the first three days of the holiday, a slight year-on-year increase.

Lawmaker Peter Shiu said the continuous geopolitical tensions, such as the Middle East conflict and a strained Sino-Japan relations, might have explained the rise in tourist volume. He said Hong Kong's jewellery and make up sectors had benefited from the Golden Week recording a double-digit growth in some districts.

The hotel sector also recorded a growth in business over the holidays. Tsui Ying-wai, executive director of the Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners, said the room occupancy rate in tourist districts had reached 90 percent. But he voiced concerns about some of the alternative options available for tourists to stay in the city, including illegal guesthouses and capsule rooms. He urges the government to strengthen enforcement against such operations.
