The mainland's May Day Golden Week holiday will kick off tomorrow.

Hoping to beat the travel rush, some holidaymakers travel to Hong Kong from up north in advance.

On the eve of the Golden Week holidays, hordes of travellers reached Hong Kong at the West Kowloon High Speed Rail Station this morning.

Many are families with children.

This Zhejiang tourist says his daughter's spring break coincides with the May Day holiday, so they are spending half of their 11-day vacation here in Hong Kong.

This Hunan tourist says their plan here is to explore the food in Hong Kong, visit Disneyland, go shopping -- and take the children to the Science Museum.

With the influx of tourists at the University of Hong Kong, the institution has implemented a fresh round of measures, requiring advance reservations from tourists.

This mainland tourist says HKU is famous, and their brother is going to take the university entrance exam, so they want to see if it's possible for him to study here in future.

The Travel Industry Council expects nearly one million tourists will visit Hong Kong this Golden Week.

Most are not following tour groups.

There are also about 800 mainland inbound groups, bringing about 30 thousand tourists.

The Travel Industry Council says most tour groups will focus on exploring Hong Kong's culture and geology, such as Sai Kung.

They add that the number of participants in each in-depth tour is small with 20 people.

In terms of departures, the Immigration Department expects the peak of departures will fall on Saturday with over 63 thousand departures.
