President Xi urges China to advance basic research, raise original innovation capacity

President Xi Jinping attended a symposium in Shanghai earlier today, during which he urged greater efforts to boost basic research and raise China's capacity for original innovation, as the global race to dominate frontier technologies intensifies.
State media cited President Xi as saying "the importance of original and disruptive innovations is becoming increasingly prominent" while he was calling for further solidifying the foundation for building the country's strength in science and technology.
He emphasised the significance of top-level design for basic research and added more efforts should be made to build talent, raise the share of funding devoted to the field and foster international cooperation, on climate change, energy, the environment and health.
