As oil prices surge, calls grow for petrol tax cuts

While the government will offer diesel subsidies for commercial vehicles, unleaded petrol used by private cars remains excluded from the relief.

That means private motorists still have to shoulder the rising pump prices.

This private car owner questioned the effectiveness of direct fuel subsidies, as oil companies may simply absorb the benefits.

He said licence fee cuts or vehicle inspection charge reduction might be more practical.

Economics Professor Terence Chong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong says the mainland also introduced mechanisms to prevent major fluctuations in pump prices.

He says the city can also lower the short-term petrol tax relief to ease motorists' burdens.
