The government announced that it will initiate a buyout of Wang Chi House if at least 75 percent of owners agree to sell their units by the end of June.

Wang Chi House is the only building in the housing estate not damaged in the Tai Po fire.

Speaking on a radio programme, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong said the current approach is voluntary, but authorities may resort to legislation to reclaim all property rights if necessary.

He noted that any legislative move would need to comply with the Basic Law and could face judicial challenges.

When asked what would happen if the 75 percent threshold is narrowly missed, he says authorities may exercise discretion in special cases.

Some residents have suggested holding an owners' meeting, but Wong said the property management company is handling matters according to the law.
