The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new medical teaching and research complex.

Chief Executive John Lee, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong Zhou Ji, and Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau attended the ceremony.

The government previously approved HKUST to establish the city’s third medical school, offering a four-year second degree medical program, with applications opening in the middle of next year.

In his speech, John Lee stated that after the new medical school is completed in 2028, it will increase local medical training, becoming an important pillar of Hong Kong's medical teaching and service system, alleviating the shortage of doctors, and helping to address the challenges brought about by an aging population.

HKUST President Nancy Ip said seven clinical professors have been recruited as faculty members, emphasising that HKUST will not poach staff from other local medical schools.
