The Fanling Bypass (East Section) will be opened to traffic on Sunday, marking the first major transport infrastructure project completed in the Northern Metropolis. Road paving and other works are still underway. The Fanling Bypass (East Section) connects Fanling Highway with the Fanling North New Development Area. It starts near Kowloon Hang in Tai Po, passes through the Lung Yeuk Tau Interchange, and connects to Shek Wu New Village. During peak hours, it allows drivers to avoid busy roads in Sheung Shui and Fanling, saving approximately ten minutes of travel time. The Civil Engineering and Development Department said the most challenging aspect of the bypass was the Lung Yeuk Tau Interchange project. The team needed to construct a "three-tiered structure"—a tunnel, a roundabout, and a pedestrian bridge—in a highly congested area within three years, surrounded by high-voltage cables and water pipes. The pedestrian bridge is the world's first to be constructed using domestically produced "S960" ultra-high-strength steel, which is about three times stronger than ordinary steel and reduces the bridge's weight by up to 90%.
