At a conference on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns Russian attacks can endanger the country's nuclear power plant. Meanwhile in Moscow, hundreds gather to commemorate those who lost their lives in the tragedy, while Pope Leo XIV calls for the Vpeaceful use of nuclear energy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Moldovan President Maia Sandu laid candles and observed a moment of silence at a memorial commemorating those who died from deadly radiation exposure while containing the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster 40 years ago. Later at a conference, Zelenskyy said Russian attacks threaten the safety of Ukraine's largest nuclear power plant. We must clearly state that only Ukrainian control, only Ukrainian specialists and Ukrainian safety protocols can guarantee that there will be no radiation problems at the Zaporizhzhia station," Zelenskyy says. At the same conference, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency signs an agreement to expand its support to Ukraine. In Moscow, servicemen and the public lay flowers at a cemetery, paying respect to those who lost their lives in the tragedy. One "liquidator" who worked onsite at the time of the incident remembers deceased workers who dealt with the aftermath, calling them heroes that must never be forgotten. And addressing a crowd in St Peter's Square on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV calls for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
