Hong Kong's police have joined hands with their counterparts in several nations in an effort to tackle those engaged in child pornography.

At least nine people have been arrested in the city so far, suspected of possessing child pornography, with one of them suspected of having sexually assaulted a male teenager on several occasions.

The operation was jointly conducted by the Hong Kong police and those from nations such as Singapore and Malaysia last month, after an investigation led to the exposure of a group involved in online child pornography.

At least 326 people were arrested on suspicion of producing or possessing such illicit content.

Among them were 9 men from Hong Kong between the ages of 18 and 61.

Authorities seized several of their computers and mobile phones containing over 200 videos or photos involving underaged individuals.

One of the arrestees, a 28-year-old man, was also suspected to have sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy on several occasions starting in 2023.

The police said the man became acquainted with the boy on social media and asked the latter out to meet in person, before subsequently sexually abusing him throughout a one year-period.

He has already been charged for one count of indecent assault.

The police urged parents to pay extra attention to their children's social media to prevent them from falling prey to such criminals.

Authorities further noted they received a total of 62 cases related to child pornography last year, which experienced a drop of 30 percent year-on-year.

More than 70 percent of victims were between the ages of 12 and 15, with the youngest being just 9-years-old.

Around half of the cases involved the production of child pornography.

A police clinical psychologist said many children who were sexually exploited may be unaware of the gravity of the situation, and sometimes even blame themselves for what happened to them.

He emphasised that residents should promptly seek professional help if they develop sexual feelings towards children.
