HK Electric has cut its fuel surcharge for the second consecutive month, trimming it by 4.4 cents to 26 cents per unit of electricity for May. The company said the new rate is based on the average actual fuel costs in the first quarter of this year. Costs were relatively low in the first two months, but geopolitical tensions have driven up global energy prices sharply from March. The upcoming tariff has not yet reflected the spike in international oil and natural gas prices impacted by the situation in the Middle East. HK Electric expects these higher fuel costs to be shown from mid-year onward, when fuel surcharges are likely to rise significantly.
