The government said a suitable fuel surcharge adjustment is crucial in maintaining Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub. In a written reply to a legislator's question on the continuous rise in fuel surcharges because of the Middle East conflict, the Transport and Logistic Bureau said aviation fuel can account for more than 30 percent of an airline's operating costs. Authorities said it is important for airlines to "appropriately raise ticket fares or increase surcharges" to sustain their reliable air services. The bureau added that it will maintain close communication with local airlines and the tourism sector.
