Some 2,200 smoking offences-related fixed penalty notices issued in Q1

The Department of Health says the Tobacco and Alcohol Control Office issued nearly 2,200 fixed penalty notices in the first quarter of this year.

From January 1st, the fixed penalty for smoking offences was increased to 3,000 dollars per notice the statutory no smoking areas were extended to cover three metres outside specified premises,
including child care centres, residential care homes, schools and hospitals.

The prohibition on smoking while queuing at transport boarding spots also took effect. 

After the implementation, more than 11,600 inspections were conducted in relation to smoking offences, resulting in the issue of nearly 2,200 fixed penalty notices and 15 summonses.

Around 3,160 notices were issued in the first quarter last year.
