Taiwanese actor Darren Wang Talu and his girlfriend were sentenced to six months behind bars after being found guilty of illegally obtaining and using personal data.
Wang was earlier found to have hired a syndicate to help him evade military service.
The case later revealed a separate financial dispute involving Wang and his girlfriend, surnamed Que, who allegedly lost 4 million New Taiwan dollars or about 1 million Hong Kong dollars in an investment scam.
Wang then coordinated efforts to recover the money by identifying the fraud suspect through a syndicate.
The New Taipei District Court ruled that Wang and his girlfriend violated the Data Protection Act.
Their sentences can be converted into fines.
The police officer who abused his position to help them obtain the data was handed a one-year-and-four-month prison term with no eligibility for conversion to a fine.
