Hong Kong logs the first local case of dengue fever of the year. The Centre for Health Protection considers the risk of local transmission to be at a moderate level and the situation will be closely monitored. The Centre for Health Protection sent personnel to inspect areas near the road construction site on Long Yan Road in Penny's Bay on Lantau Island -- and clean up drainage channels clogged with weeds and dead leaves. CHP says the city's first local case of dengue fever this year involves a 21-year-old male patient who had been bitten by mosquitoes while working in the area. Speaking on an RTHK radio programme, Head of CHP's Communicable Disease Branch Albert Au says for the sake of prudence, the person in charge of the site has been advised to remove water containers at the site, and instructed to temporarily suspend work there until the area has completed mosquito control and other prevention efforts. The patient lives in Tai Wo Estate in Tai Po, and authorities have set up a health station in Tai Wo Plaza to provide free dengue antibody testing to the public. CHP says the overall local transmission risk is at a moderate level. Au says with the rise in temperature and the arrival of the rainy season, the environment is very conducive to mosquito breeding. Alongside a high incidence of mosquito-borne diseases in Southeast Asia and neighbouring regions, the public should not overlook the risks of an outbreak. He says CHP would continue to investigate and closely monitor the situation.
