The crew of Shenzhou-21 will extend their stay in orbit by one month to further validate technologies for long-term habitation aboard the space station.

Mission commander Zhang Lu has now completed seven extravehicular activities, making him the Chinese astronaut who made the most spacewalks to date.

During the mission's third series of extravehicular activities, commander Zhang Lu and astronaut Wu Fei carried out operations outside the station.

With support from the station's robotic arm and ground-based researchers, the team completed the installation of space debris protection devices and inspected external equipment.

The operation lasted around five and a half hours and concluded at around 1 a.m. on Friday.

Originally scheduled for a six-month stay, the mission has been extended by an additional month, following assessment.

Shenzhou-21 was launched on October 31 which also marked the first time four mice were brought aboard the station for scientific experiments.
