A recent survey has revealed that economic pressure remains the primary reason why Hong Kong residents are reluctant to have children.

According to the Hong Kong Federation of Women, only 31,714 babies were born in the city last year.

The total fertility rate has plummeted to a record low of 0.8.

The organization interviewed around 2,300 people between January and February.

Results show 70 percent of respondents were unwilling to have children, with over 98 percent citing financial stress as the biggest factor.

The Federation believes the decline was due to economic strain, housing shortages and demanding work schedules.
