Hungarian voters ousted long-serving Prime Minister Viktor Orban after 16 years in power. Pro-EU's Peter Magyar and his Tisza party won the parliamentary election which had a turnout of nearly 80 percent. In a speech to thousands of jubilant supporters who gathered along the Danube River in Budapest, Peter Magyar said the voters had rewritten Hungarian history. He said "we won not small but big, very very big." "Together we changed the Orban regime, together we liberated Hungary, we took our homeland back." Hungarian voter Robert Nemeth said: "Look around, all the people here are very happy. We never felt this in 16 years after 2010. Actually there was a big relief for the whole country. And like a redemption. So actually this country was asking for help for many many years. There was nobody who could (bring) us together, but there was one man (Magyar) who stand up for the whole people, who believe something else." Magyar, a former Orban loyalist, campaigned against corruption and on everyday issues like health care and public transport. He has pledged to rebuild Hungary's relationship with the European Union and NATO, ties that frayed under Orban. The defeat was a stunning blow to Viktor Orban, who quickly conceded defeat after what he called a "painful" election result. His party is expected to win 55 seats, while Magyar's party is projected to win 138 out of 199 seats in the parliament. Days before the election, US Vice President JD Vance had travelled to Budapest saying he had come to help Orban.
