The Greek government is planning to ban social media for children under the age of 15.

In a video posted online, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the decision was made after authorities considered the adverse effects of social media on children -- such as sleep deprivation, increased stress and phone addiction.

The Mediterranean country became the latest in the EU to unveil plans for a blanket ban for children under the age of 15.

The Greek leader also said he aims to pressure the 27-member bloc to formalise EU-wide age restrictions.

This as several countries have earlier implemented similar bans including Australia in December last year and Indonesia last month.
