KMT Cheng Li-wun visits mainland as speculation grows over possible meeting with Xi Jinping

Cheng Li-wun, the chairperson of Taiwan's Nationalist Party or Kuomintang, continued the second day of her six-day trip to the mainland.
This morning, she embarked on a visit to the memorial for Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China, as speculation grows over a possible meeting with President Xi Jinping on Friday.
Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan's largest opposition party Kuomintang began the first full day of her six-day mainland trip, visiting Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing's eastern suburb of Purple Mountain.
Nanjing is also the capital of the Kuomintang-led Republic of China government before it fled to Taiwan in 1949, having lost a civil war with the Chinese Communist Party.
In a moment filled with symbolism, She laid a wreath in tribute at Sun's tomb and a party spokesperson read a memorial statement.
Afterward, she spoke at the mausoleum's Square of Universal Love.
Cheng said, the root of historical tragedy lies in the Chinese Civil War. Therefore, ending cross-strait hostility and building peace is Kuomintang's inescapable historical responsibility and duty.
She hopes that today they can sow the seeds of peace not only for Chinese people on both sides of the Strait, but for all humankind.
This marks the first visit by a sitting Kuomintang leader to the mainland in a decade.
Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office says Cheng's visit promotes the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian says Cheng's visit aligns with the mainstream public desire in Taiwan for peace, development, exchanges and cooperation, and it has positive significance for advancing peaceful cross-strait ties; the visit also helps to safeguard the interests and welfare of Taiwanese compatriots.
Cheng continued her itinerary in Shanghai in the afternoon and will head to Beijing on Thursday.
