The government has applied to the High Court to confiscate assets related to offences under the National Security Law involving Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital. The case is scheduled to be heard on July 8. According to the Judiciary's website, the Court of First Instance will handle the application for a confiscation order on that day. Lai was charged with three offences, including collusion with foreign forces to endanger national security. He was convicted in February and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In a statement issued last week, the government said that under Article 32 of the Hong Kong National Security Law, any funds, proceeds, or assets obtained from or used in committing offences endangering national security should be seized and confiscated. The measure aims to prevent accomplices or agents from continuing to use such assets to carry out activities that threaten national security.
