CX flight makes emergency landing in Japan over suspected technical fault

A Hong Kong-bound Cathay Pacific passenger flight that departed from the United States made an emergency landing in Japan after a suspected mechanical glitch.

Japan's Kyodo News reported that its pilot detected a drop in engine oil levels during the flight and declared an emergency.

No injuries were reported.

The CX883 flight -- a Boeing 777 -- took off from Los Angeles and had been scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong at around 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The aircraft later made an emergency landing at Kansai International Airport at around 4:30 p.m. local time.

373 people were on board the flight.

The airport temporarily closed the runway for inspection.

Cathay Pacific Airways says the crew identified a possible technical fault mid-flight. The aircraft in question in undergoing inspection.

Affected passengers have been rebooked on other flights to return to Hong Kong.
