The independent inquiry into the deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po holds its sixth hearing today.

Proceedings continued where counsel examined a key witness -- Chung Kit-man, who is the director and engineer at a contractor responsible for maintaining the estate's fire services system. Chung told the panel that he did not personally visit the site during three maintenance checks conducted in March, October and November last year. Instead he relied on reports from colleagues and provided guidance when necessary.

On inspection records, the contractor had indicated there was no leakage on the water tanks. However, the contractor checked the "No" box in the fire safety annual review, regarding whether the water tank maintained at least 90 percent of the requred capacity.

Chung says he might have filled the entries incorrectly. Noting that the report was prepared by his colleagues, he says he only signed off on the reports without further follow-up.
