Initially slated to travel to Beijing next week, US President Donald Trump indicated on social media that he will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in mid-May, leading to speculation the US hoped the war with Iran would be over by then. Beijing says it has maintained communication with Washington regarding the Trump-Xi meeting. The rescheduling of Trump's first visit to China in eight and a half years was announced on a Truth Social post on Wednesday, in which the US president declared he would travel to Beijing on May 14th and 15th. He also stated he would host President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan for a reciprocal visit in Washington later this year. "Our representatives are finalizing preparations for these Historic Visits," Trump said, adding he looks forward to seeing the Chinese leader in what will be a "monumental event." On the same day, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Xi had understood the reasons for rescheduling the trip after speaking with Trump. When asked whether tensions in the Middle East could wind down in time for their meeting, she said Washington has always estimated the Iran war to last about four to six weeks. Leavitt noted: "We've always estimated approximately four to six weeks so you could do the math on that, Mario, but we do look forward. I know the president looks forward to going to China on May 14th and 15th. And of course, as always, we'll provide additional logistical details to all of you in the media for that trip." In Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesperson reiterated today that head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guiding role in Sino-US relations, emphasising the two parties have maintained communication regarding President Trump's visit to China.
