The government is studying the introduction of a reservation and fee system for popular tourist attractions in the countryside. Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan said it will be piloted first at sites such as the Sai Kung East Campground, and in the long term, it may be developed in cooperation with tour groups to create related products. Speaking on a radio programme, Tse said: “Popular tourist destinations and national parks around the world charge fees because fees improve management and facilities. We could charge fees only during holidays or certain times, effectively allowing locals to visit without paying. Our place is so beautiful; how can we gradually develop the tourism industry and products, for example, by partnering with travel companies to create projects and tours? For instance, when I go to Tung Pak, I could not only enjoy the tour but also have a seafood meal or visit two or three other attractions.”
