Police crack down on jaywalking and distracted driving

In a two-week territory-wide operation that started in the middle of this week, Police have stepped up enforcement across Hong Kong targeting distracted driving, jaywalking and other pedestrian traffic violations.
At the junction of Hip Wo Street and Yuet Wah Street in Kwun Tong, some elderly pedestrians were rushing to cross at the last moment before the traffic light turned red.
Officers stationed nearby later issued on-the-spot tickets.
Police say officers will be ticketed without prior warning.
Relevant traffic violations could entail a fine of 2,000 dollars.
The authorities note that 96 people were killed in fatal traffic accidents last year.
Among them, 52 -- more than half -- were pedestrians marking a 24 percent year-on-year increase.
Police urged drivers to remain vigilant and comply with traffic laws while reminding pedestrians not to run red lights and weave between vehicles.
