Director of Beijing's Hong Kong and Macao Work Office Xia Baolong met Financial Secretary Paul Chan in Beijing this morning. Xia said the country's "15th Five-Year Plan" outline, adopted by the National People's Congress this year, supports Hong Kong in consolidating and enhancing its competitive advantages, and in better integrating into and serving the nation's overall development. He expressed confidence the SAR government will lead all sectors of society to formulate Hong Kong's first five-year plan, tailored to local conditions, to further strengthen its status as an international financial, shipping and trade centre, while accelerating the development of an international innovation and technology hub, injecting new momentum into economic growth. Paul Chan also briefed Xia on Hong Kong's overall economic situation and financial market performance, as well as the drafting of Hong Kong's first five-year plan. Also attended the meeting were Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority Eddie Yue. In the afternoon, Paul Chan met Governor of the People's Bank of China Pan Gongsheng and Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission Wu Qing to discuss financial market development and regulatory cooperation. Chan will continue his visit in Beijing tomorrow.
