HongKong Airlines announced an increase in passenger fuel surcharges starting Thursday, with a HK$150 surcharge for one-way flights to the Middle East and Europe. The HongKong Airlines website shows the adjustments. For long-haul flights to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, the fuel surcharge will increase from HK$589 to HK$739, an increase of approximately 25%, or HK$150 per leg, meaning passengers will pay an extra HK$300 round trip. For short-haul flights to Japan, South Korea, and Thailand, the fuel surcharge will increase from HK$162 to HK$212, an increase of 30%. In 2018, the Civil Aviation Department lifted the ban on fuel surcharges, allowing airlines to levy them based on commercial considerations, and requiring airlines to clearly display the fee on direct-sale tickets.
