The rapid surge in oil prices is beginning to take its toll on the city's tourism industry.

Some travel agencies predicted there will be a hike in fuel surcharges on average as soon as next month, with costs increasing by 100 to several hundred dollars.

Residents planning to travel abroad for their Easter holidays next month may choose to fly alternative routes to steer clear of the Middle East, but pricier tickets caused by the rise of global fuel surcharges are unavoidable.

While the surcharges are adjusted on a monthly basis, different airlines have adopted various policies on the matter.

Cathay Pacific, the city's flagship carrier, reduced prices back in February.

Short-haul flights between Hong Kong and Japan, South Korea and Thailand only required a surcharge of 142 dollars, while long-haul flights between the city and Europe, the US and Australia required a surcharge of 569 dollars.

Cathay said it assesses its fuel surcharge levels every month, and mainly makes its considerations in accordance with the aviation sector's fuel market situation.

This as many travellers believe a hike in fuel surcharges will only be a matter of time.

This woman said direct flight options are limited, so there's no choice but to pay more in the future.

While this man said the increased surcharge may just rise to around 1,000 dollars, calling it an acceptable price.

Some travel agencies revealed that a number of local airlines already decided to increase fuel surcharges, with the price increasing by between 50 and 100 dollars for short-haul flights, and 200 and 300 dollars for long-haul flights.

The change in prices could be applied as soon as the Easter holidays.

Steve Huen, the executive director of a local travel agency, said the increased surcharges will not affect the quality of meals or hotel options that airlines provide for passengers, and stressed the price differences will be barely noticeable.
