Premier Li Qiang's work report places considerable emphasis on innovation and technology, noting China will accelerate the development of "high-level technological self-reliance."

The report outlines plans to foster new engines of economic growth in emerging industries, such as quantum computing, embodied artificial intelligence, and 6G mobile networks.

In line with the rapid development of technology in China, the work report highlights Beijing's commitment to science and technology.

Stressing tech innovation and self-reliance, Premier Li Qiang calls for breakthroughs in core technologies.

The report outlines the priorities for research and development, as well as the popularization of science and technology.

Li said the government is expected to take the lead in investing in and nurturing emerging industries.

State-owned enterprises are encouraged to explore applications to help foster new pillar industries, such as integrated circuits, aerospace, biomedicine and the low-altitude economy.

But some industry leaders said there are some current challenges.

Lei Jun, Founder and CEO of tech giant Xiaomi said the shortage of computer chips creates a major bottleneck.

Lei said with the surging demand for artificial intelligence, there is a severe global shortage of computer chips, and prices skyrocketed over the past year.

He said this has put pressure on his firm's smartphone and related businesses, and they are exploring ways to minimize the impact on customers.
