The National People's Congress annual session will commence at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Hong Kong deputies attending the event welcome the news that there will be more policies to support Hong Kong under the 15th Five-Year Plan.

The eight-day session of the National People's Congress annual session will run from Wednesday until next Thursday, featuring three plenary meetings.

This year's agenda includes approving the draft outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan.

A spokesperson said the central government will set out arrangements to support Hong Kong in leveraging its unique advantages, with new policy measures expected to benefit the city.

He said at this new starting point, Hong Kong will firmly grasp the convergence of the country's needs and Hong Kong's strengths, achieve better development by integrating into and serving the overall development of the country, and take a new leap forward in the process of Chinese-style modernisation.

Speaking this morning before attending a preparatory meeting, Rock Chen, a Hong Kong deputy to the NPC, said he hopes the plan will strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international financial centre. He called for support in building a global gold trading hub and for measures to boost the internationalisation of the renminbi.

Another deputy, Frank Chan, former Secretary for Transport and Housing, said Hong Kong must accelerate technological innovation and development in the Northern Metropolis. He stressed the importance of these efforts given the current geopolitical climate.

The affairs of Hong Kong and Macao were first mentioned in the Ninth Five-Year Plan in 1996. They had become an independent chapter by the 12th Five-Year plan in 2011.
