Videos of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton answering questions about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been released by a U.S. House committee investigating the late disgraced financier. The depositions spanned hours over two days last week.

In closed-door depositions with lawmakers, former U.S. President Bill Clinton distanced himself from the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

(Committee member) Let's talk about your relationship with Mr. Epstein after you left the White House. How would you characterise your relationship with Mr.Epstein?

During the time it was cordial.

(Committee member) At any time, would you characterise Mr. Epstein as a friend?

We were friendly, but I didn't know him well enough to be saying we were friends.

(Committee member) How often did you communicate with Mr. Epstein?

Usually only on the trips. I did go to his house once, as you know.

(Committee member) When did you first learn of Jeffrey Epstein's crimes?

I think in 2008 when he was prosecuted. I didn't, there was nothing that I saw when I was around him that made me realise he was trafficking women.

Bill Clinton told the committee that he had ended his relationship with Epstein years before the financier entered a 2008 guilty plea to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that she did not recall ever meeting Epstein and did not know of his crimes, and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell's crimes at that time.

"Like every decent person, I've been horrified by what we have learned about their crimes. It's unfathomable that Mr. Epstein initially got a slap on the wrist in 2008, which allowed him to continue his predatory practices for another decade."
