Following US and Israeli attacks at Iran, the US State Department has issued updated security guidelines for American citizens worldwide - particularly those in the Middle East - urging them to "exercise increased caution."

Officials in New York City and Texas say security will be stepped up at sensitive locations in response to the situation in Iran.

Tensions continue to flare in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran.

At one of Washington, D.C.'s three major airports, International Thurgood Marshall Airport, security appears to be at a regular level.

Some Americans say they would avoid travelling to the Middle East and hope the situation would not further escalate.

American citizen Forrest said: "I don't think travelling there is a good idea right now. Honestly I think it's smoke and mirrors. I don't think it's about Iran. I think it's about other things that the US government wants to take attention away from, such as the Epstein list."

David, an American citizen said: "Praying for peace. We don't want to see war. It happens unfortunately. Just pray that everybody's okay."

On Capitol Hill, divergent views among lawmakers over Iran's situation. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina says even after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the United States will not deploy ground troops to Iran.

He stresses that America's mission is not to choose Iran's next leader, but to ensure Iran no longer remains the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and to help the Iranian people rebuild their government.

Multiple US Congress members, meanwhile, have questioned the legitimacy of the operation.

Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona wrote on social media that such actions should not become an excuse for a broader war that "punishes civilians" and puts U.S. troops at risk.

We spoke with police officers stationed outside the White House. They told us security levels around the perimeters have remained the same, with no significant increase in manpower in response to recent protests or the situation in Iran. In other states, Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he has directed the Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to ramp up security at key sites across the state.

Measures include heightened protection of energy facilities, ports, and cyber infrastructure against potential retaliatory threats.

Meanwhile, the New York City Police Department says out of an abundance of caution, it is increasing patrols at various "sensitive locations" - including diplomatic premises, as well as cultural and religious venues while closely monitoring developments in Iran and the Middle East.
