Many an industry in the United States is reportedly reeling from worsening shortage of rare earth supplies following China's export curbs, with some aerospace firms taking actions to suspend production. In Beijing, the commerce ministry indicated they remain in communication with their US counterparts to prepare for their 6th round of trade talks which will take place in the near future. According to a Reuters report, industry insiders say two of the suppliers to US aerospace and semiconductor companies are turning away some clients. The rare earth shortages centre on yttrium and scandium. These elements are essential for defence technology, aerospace and semiconductors and are almost entirely produced by China. Chinese customs data show compared with the 333 tonnes of yttrium shipments to the US last April, only 17 tonnes of yttrium with prices jumping about 69 times higher than previously made it to the country eight months after Beijing implemented stringent export control measures. Meanwhile, the report pointed out the shortage of scandium would weigh on the production of the next generation of 5G chips.
