The Security Bureau expects that by 2028, a total of 60,000 surveillance cameras will be installed in Hong Kong. To reach that target, it is applying for about 4 billion dollars in funding from the Legislative Council. The Security Bureau says that the first phase of the project was completed at the end of last year, with about 5,000 cameras installed in public places in various districts. As of January this year, it has assisted the police in cracking down on 899 cases, including murder and robbery, which are said to come with remarkable results. Authorities are planning to connect surveillance networks at public facilities including tunnels, public areas at public housing estates and Leisure and Cultural Services venues with the bureau in the second and third phases. The police are also studying the possibilities to collaborate with private commercial organisations to connect suitable CCTV cameras to their system with artificial intelligence image analysis functions introduced.
