In relation to the Panamanian government's seizure of CK Hutchison's ports, Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau lodged a strong protest with the Panamanian Consul General in Hong Kong, criticizing Panama's forced takeover of the canal ports as severely damaging the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong businesses 

He adds the Hong Kong SAR Government condemns this blatant act and will firmly support and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong businesses overseas.

A Hong Kong government spokesperson also said that the Panamanian government has destroyed its national creditability and seriously undermined international trade rules. Relevant companies have initiated arbitration proceedings, urging Panama to respect the spirit of contracts and provide a fair and just business environment for legally operating businesses in Panama.
