Hong Kong welcomed 1.35 million mainland tourists during the first eight days of Spring Festival holiday, marking a 13 percent increase year on year. Take a look at how the retail and hospitality sectors benefitted from the travel boom.

Dubbed the "longest Spring Festival holiday ever," the nine-day break offered Chinese mainlanders greater flexibility in their festive arrangements.

According to the Immigration Department, Hong Kong recorded 1.35 million mainland visitor arrivals from the start of the Golden Week, to the 6th day of the Lunar New Year.

Including overseas travellers, the city saw a total of 1.6 million visitors over the period. Both figures are 13 percent higher than last year.

A representative from the tourism sector noted that business was noticeably driven by the holiday. Long queues could be seen outside luxury boutiques.

Lawmaker for the retail industry Peter Shiu noted business performance exceeded his expectations.

"Those in the cosmetics industry told me that they saw a double-digit growth, which is more than we anticipated," he said.

In the hospitality sector, a hotel group reported occupancy rates exceeding 90 percent over the festival -- on par with last year.

Average room rates and total revenue rose by 13 percent, beating the target of 10 percent.

Meanwhile, the "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" scheme, which allowed cars into urban areas, also brought momentum to the city's business.

A representative from a hotel group said these guests usually stay for two nights to make the most of their visit, and many of them enjoyed the Lunar New Year fireworks display.
